Welcome speech by Ahmed J Versi, Editor of The Muslim News at the Seventh The Muslim News Awards for Excellence

Rt Honourable Hilary Benn MP, distinguished guests, colleagues and friends, Assalamu 'alaykum (peace be with you).

Thank you all for attending to what is now the 7th Muslim News Awards for Excellence.

As always, I would like to extend a particular welcome to all those who were nominated for tonight's awards; and to our readers who took the time to nominate men, women and young people of excellence. My congratulations to you all and my sincere commiserations to those of you who were unable to make it onto the shortlist.

These awards are about you all. You are the reason we are here tonight.

I will begin (as I always do) with a phrase that I hope one day I will never have to say: this has been another difficult year in the life of Britain’s Muslims.
We are living in a world where peace and justice have been drowned under the storms of war and injustice.

A world where most of the victims seem to be the innocent of Muslim countries.
