First Turkish casualties in Iraq offensive
24th February, 2008
Turkey has begun burying the first of its troops, killed in a military offensive against Kurdish separatists in northern Iraq.
In the northern Turkish city of Corum, thousands of mourners gathered for the funeral of a soldier who died in attacks on the Kurdistan Workers' Party.
The Turkish military say just seven of its troops have been killed in the latest operation, although PKK sources say it is three times that number.
Turkey has intensified its military operation in northern Iraq over the last couple of days.
Turkish officials claim to have killed a total of 79 PKK fighters, although independent confirmation of the numbers is difficult. The fighting is taking place in largely inaccessible mountain terrain.
Up to 10,000 troops are reported to have been mobilised.
